"In the photograph of a back alley in Beijing, little is happening,
yet there is a discernable mood implied by the free composition and warm light.
The subjects seem vaguely aware of the observer, yet they convey a sense
of self-absorbed naturalness characteristic in most of Dougherty's work. His
stated purpose is to motivate contemplation of the ordinary, and his careful
use of the non-decisive moment achieves this goal.
As a working economist, his personal documentary projects have focused on the
subjects around him in New York, China, India, and elsewhere. His collection
of images, Near the Places that I have Lived, represent studied observations
of the people and communities in which he has lived and traveled over the past
few years."
